Hi All! It’s been quite a while since I put up a blog post, but the timing of this one is crucial, so here I am. It’s been a busy summer with Terra’s Place, seeing Moms while also running the business end of things, and we just returned from an amazing Postpartum Support International 2018 conference in Houston! Crazy, crazy muggy, but what a wonderful community of providers and moms supporting families. Yaay!
As you are likely aware, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared breastfeeding the ideal way to feed infants, and has also declared August 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week. Since this can be a difficult subject for many, we wanted to clarify our position. It is simply this: we support all mamas doing what is best for their babies, themselves and their families, without guilt, shame, blame or harassment from the government or society. That’s it. Breastfeeding is an awesome and incredible experience for many, and they should be able to do it wherever they need to with dignity and without interference. It is also a painful and frustrating and even impossible experience for many others, and they should be able to bottle feed with the same dignity and lack of “opinioning” from others. Babies who are successfully fed thrive. Period. We cannot always do what is ideal. I can’t always afford to buy organic. I sometimes drive too fast. I don’t always save enough money. We’re all doing the best we can in our lives. And you can only do the best you can for your baby, and you have to know that that is absolutely good enough. That’s right, ABSOLUTELY GOOD ENOUGH!!! Your child will not ever be sitting in a therapist’s office or fail to go to college simply because you did or did not breastfeed. Do your best. Feed your baby however you can.
So here’s to Moms, Dads, partners, siblings, and all the family members who make and keep babies healthy and happy. We love you, we support you, and we think you’re doing great. We really do.
